Spanning essentially over ten days, Durga puja celebrations become livelier with the rhythmic sounds of Dhak (a type of drum), Dhunuchi nachh (a regional dance form performed especially on day 8) and Shiuli (a beautiful fragrant flower). All Durga Puja celebrations in Calcutta conclude on Dashsmi. On this day, as the idol is taken out on a decorated chariot for immersion in the River Ganges, all Bengali ladies play with vermillion. This particular event is referred to as Sindoor Khela in local dialect. Durga Puja 2010 will be celebrated on:
Shasti – 6th day
Saptami – 7th day
Ashtami – 8th day
Navami – 9th day
Dasami – 10th day
Each day has its own significance and festivity.
